What Is Bowls?

Bowls is a game played on a flat, rectangular surface known as a green. The aim? To roll your bowl as close as possible to the small white ball called the “jack.” Sounds simple, right? Well, there’s a lot more to it!

The green can vary in size but must be between 32 and 40 metres in length. It is surrounded by a small ditch, marking the boundary, and divided into rinks—playing lanes at least 4.8 metres wide.

How Do You Play?

The objective of bowls is straightforward: get your bowl closer to the jack than your opponent’s. But here’s the twist—each bowl is slightly asymmetrical, which means it curves as it rolls! Strategy and precision are the keys to mastering this game.

• Players take turns delivering bowls from the mat at one end of the rink.
• The game can be played individually or in teams (pairs, triples, or fours).
• Points are scored based on how many of your bowls are closer to the jack than your opponent’s.
